4×4 all-wheel drive
What to expect
A 4×4 camper is an off-road vehicle with four-wheel drive. It comes in two versions: with a rooftop tent or with a sleeping area inside the vehicle itself. This class is for everyone who deliberately wants to travel off the main roads.
With a campervan without 4WD, you stay on paved roads in Australia. Many rental companies only allow gravel on short, well-maintained access roads to campsites and sights, and some prohibit unpaved roads altogether. With the 4×4, you’re allowed to drive off-road and reach parts of the country that a normal campervan can’t. The Northern Territory and Western Australia in particular, with their unpaved routes, are ideal for this.
It’s worth it if adventurous off-road routes appeal to you. But even with 4WD, not everything is allowed: many rental companies exclude beaches and sand islands, and for some tracks such as the Gibb River Road in the Kimberley you need approval in advance. For the paved highways along the coast, on the other hand, you don’t need four-wheel drive.
