HiTop campervan
What to expect
A HiTop campervan is a van with a high roof. This usually lets you stand upright inside; in most models, the interior height is 1.84 to 2.0 m. Depending on the model, the van is 4.2 to 6.1 m long and still compact enough for narrow, winding coastal roads.
In the back there’s usually a seating area with a table that you convert into a bed in the evening. Depending on the provider and layout, the kitchen is at the rear or behind the front seats. You cook on a gas stove, and food is usually kept in a fridge. Depending on the model, 2 to 5 people can travel, with beds for 2 to 4.
The advantage is the extra space with standing room. In return, you convert the seating area into a bed every evening, and most models have no bathroom. Many rental companies exclude unpaved roads in the rental agreement: in Australia largely for campervans without 4WD, in New Zealand certain routes.
