Budget sleeper van
What to expect
The budget sleeper van is a converted van with a bed, stove and fridge or cool box. You sleep in the back of the vehicle, and the kitchen is usually at the rear. Most models are designed for two people; some have beds for three or four.
Cooking is mostly done outside at the tailgate, often on a portable gas stove. Depending on the model, you keep your food in a fridge or a cool box. At 4.0 to 5.9 meters long, the campervan stays compact and is easy to park, even in the city. However, the interior height isn’t enough to stand up: where specified, it’s 1.2 to 1.64 meters.
There’s no shower, and a toilet only in exceptional cases. So you’ll need campsites with bathroom facilities – in Australia, for example, caravan parks or national park campgrounds. In New Zealand, without a self-contained certificate you stay at campsites, holiday parks and DOC campgrounds. The sleeper van is a good fit if you want to travel on a budget, alone or as a couple, and mostly cook outdoors.
