Vehicle class

Motorhome

The motorhome is the largest of our vehicle classes: fixed beds, a shower and toilet on board and enough space for two to six people on long journeys.

What to expect

The motorhome is laid out similarly to a Sprinter-style campervan but offers more space and more sleeping options. Depending on the model, two, four or six people sleep in fixed beds. All vehicles in this class have a shower and toilet on board; you cook on a gas stove, and the fridge usually has a freezer compartment. The interior height is 1.93 to 2.15 m.

This makes the motorhome a good fit for families and groups, but also for couples who want more space on the road. There’s enough storage for several weeks, and all vehicles in this class have automatic transmission.

The size also has drawbacks. At 5.75 to 7.9 m long, you travel more slowly, and parking is difficult in the city centers of Sydney or Melbourne. In New Zealand, allow for a little more calm at the wheel on the South Island, as driving on the left and steep mountain roads feel different in a long vehicle. In winter, snow chains may be required on the alpine passes there.

Good to know

The minimum age is usually 21, for some models 18 or 23. In Australia’s tropical north, a powered site is worthwhile, as the air conditioning in the living area usually only runs on mains power.
