We arrange five vehicle classes – from the budget sleeper van to the 4WD camper for the Outback. You don’t need four-wheel drive for the paved highways along the coast. Together, we’ll work out which class suits your route in Australia.
Converted van with a bed, cool box and small kitchen – ideal for solo travelers and couples who want to travel on a budget and mostly cook outdoors.
Thanks to the high roof, you can stand upright inside. Kitchenette, bed and storage space are on board – and the van is still compact enough for narrow coastal roads.
Large panel van with a fixed bed, kitchen and often a shower and toilet on board – comfortable for longer trips for two.
The vehicles shown here are real campervans we arrange in Australia – with details on the number of people, year of manufacture, transmission and bathroom facilities. Whether your preferred model is available for your dates depends on the season, pick-up location and rental period. That’s why we look for your campervan once we have your request and get back to you with suitable suggestions.
What your campervan costs depends mainly on the vehicle class, travel dates and route – there is no nationwide peak season in Australia. In the tropical north around Cairns and Darwin, the dry season is most in demand; in the south, it’s summer from December to February, especially during the school holidays from mid-December to the end of January. Fleets are then often booked out early and daily rates are usually at their highest. If you start a few weeks earlier or later, you’ll usually get the same vehicle for less.
The rental company, the age of the vehicle and availability also play a role – the longer you travel, the lower the daily rate tends to be. The table below shows you roughly what to expect – you’ll get your exact quote on request.
| Vehicle class | Low seasonMay–August | Shoulder seasonMarch–April, Sept–Nov | Peak seasonDec–Feb and Easter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget sleeper van | €25–55 | €30–65 | €45–95 |
| HiTop campervan | €45–95 | €45–105 | €75–150 |

| Motorhome | €100–160 | €110–185 | €190–300 |

Guide prices per day as price ranges, as of September 2026: published prices from comparison sites, rental companies and travel guides, mostly “from” prices, often for rentals of several weeks, AUD converted at the ECB rate of 24 September 2026. Not an offer from us – booked prices are often higher. Easter counts as peak season; in the tropical north, July and August can be more expensive. For 4×4 campers it’s the other way round: most expensive from May to September, cheapest from December to February. Usually not included: additional insurance, one-way fee, fuel and campsites.
Not included in the daily rate, among other things:
Crockery, cooking utensils and bed linen aren’t included with every rental company – we check in advance what comes with your quote. We explain how the bond and insurance work in the FAQ.
Some starting points are thousands of kilometers apart – where you pick up your campervan helps determine what you can manage in your time. It’s better to focus on one region. In Australia, you drive on the left and go clockwise around roundabouts. Plan your stages so that you arrive before sunset, because kangaroos, wallabies and wombats are out and about in the countryside at dusk. Only overtake road trains with plenty of space and a clear view, and in the Outback it’s better to fill up once too often.
Sydney is the first stop for many, and you can reach the Blue Mountains in one to two hours. The classic route heads up the coast to Brisbane or Cairns; in the other direction, it takes you via the Grand Pacific Drive and the South Coast to Melbourne. The most pleasant months are September to November and March to May. More in our guide to destinations around Sydney (in German).
Melbourne is the starting point for the Great Ocean Road with the Twelve Apostles. Phillip Island and the Grampians are one to three hours’ drive away. Popular routes are the south coast to Adelaide and the route north via Sydney. It’s warmest from December to March. More in our guide to destinations around Melbourne (in German).
Cairns in the tropical north is the starting point for tours to the Great Barrier Reef. Port Douglas and the Daintree Rainforest are one to two hours away. The most pleasant time is the dry season from May to October. From November to May it’s stinger season – swimming is done inside the stinger nets of patrolled beaches. You’ll find the whole route in our East Coast itinerary Sydney–Cairns (in German).
Brisbane is around 900 road kilometers north of Sydney. You can reach the Gold Coast, Byron Bay and Noosa in one to two hours. This is where the shorter East Coast route to Cairns starts, around 1,700 kilometers. K’gari, formerly Fraser Island, is generally off-limits for rental campervans.
Perth is the main starting point for Western Australia. From October to April, the loop south via Margaret River and Albany to Esperance is worthwhile; from May to September, the north with Exmouth and Karijini National Park. For longer rentals, a one-way hire to Darwin is also possible.
Would you rather start in Adelaide, Darwin, Alice Springs, Hobart or on the Gold Coast? You can select these locations in the request form too. If you’re still unsure, just send us your rough plan.

Whether it’s a compact campervan for two, a spacious motorhome for the family or a 4WD camper for adventurous routes – the choice is huge. We help you find the vehicle that suits your route, your travel style, your group size, your preferences and your budget.
As standard, most rental companies offer basic cover: a high bond is required, and in the event of an accident or damage you’re liable up to the amount of the excess. For an extra charge, you can usually upgrade to more comprehensive cover with a significantly reduced excess – in most cases, with no excess at all. We recommend this option so you can enjoy your trip with peace of mind.
Prices can vary considerably depending on the vehicle, season, rental period and rental company. We compare different campervans and clearly show you what’s included in the price and what additional costs to expect on your trip.

Send us your travel dates and tell us where you’d like to pick up and drop off. We’ll tell you which campervan suits you and whether your route is realistic in the time you have – Sydney to Cairns alone is more than 2,500 kilometers on the coastal route. If you’re planning a one-way rental, we’ll find out which rental company offers your route and what it costs extra. Your request is non-binding, and you can decide in your own time whether to book.
